Pete Genesis, of Route 86 and I represent all of Toronto, but mainly Scarborough. Urban Steez: How did you come up with your music name? Pete Genesis: I actually went by the name Pete Parker because I was a huge Spider-Man fan as kid. I wanted to have a more original name so, one day I was making beats in my basement and I saw my Sega Genesis and put the Pete with the Genesis. Urban Steez: How long have you been doing music and what made you get into music? Pete Genesis: I started rapping at about 13 years old. Just free styling in my church basement with my friends. Music has been a huge part of my life before I turned to Hip Hop. Singing in church choirs and the music I heard growing up as a kid helped me become the artist I am today. Urban Steez: That’s wassup! How would you describe your style and why? And what do you feel you can bring to the table as an artist? Pete Genesis: I feel I am more of a conscious MC because I try to get to people to listen to the message I have to say or tell stories to paint vivid pictures to my listeners. I feel I can bring an element of Hip-Hop that has been missing for awhile and that’s just being true to who you are through the music. Also making music for the people and not for myself. I think that I can impact peoples soul through my music so they can get a better feel of the type of person I am. Urban Steez: Good stuff. If you had to pick which label to be signed to what would it be and why? Pete Genesis: I would have to go with my dudes over at G.O.O.D Music (Kanye West Label). I have 3 of my favorite artists in the industry over there in Kanye, Common, and John Legend. I would fit best with them because my style of music is very similar. Soulful beats, influential music and good direction. I like the direction they are taking with their newer artists Kid Cudi and Big Sean. It shows that they are willing to take risks and appeal to younger artists as the music continues to change. Urban Steez: Yea, that would be a good look, especially for your rap style. Who would you want to collaborate with in the music industry and why? Pete Genesis: It would have to be Kanye West. I could talk forever about this dude. He has a passion for music that you can feel through his beats and lyrics. Anything he touches is like a masterpiece. I owe the way I make beats and my style to him. He made me realize how influential soul samples can be to a song. I would love to see the process of how he makes beats and how his creativity is used. Urban Steez: I feel you , who wouldn’t! So how do you feel you rank against top music talents today? And why? Pete Genesis: I don’t think I’m that far off from the rest. I know I may have to put some more work in but I think I can run with the best of them. My music is not really similar to anyone right now in Hip Hop right now. I don’t do the auto-tune thing so I don’t gotta compete with the 10 million artists out there trying to be robots. I feel I am in a pretty good position to make some noise in the game. Urban Steez: Lol well said, you got to be Will Smith in iRobot yaDigg lol …What are you working on now and when can fans expect to hear more from you? Pete Genesis: I’m just mainly working on collaborations with other local artists in Toronto so that people can get familiar with my music and my sound. I have some new music I’m working on for my EP/mixtape coming out in 2010. Right now, I’m still trying to get people to listen to our mixtape, The Better Way Project Vol.1 that came out in June and Volume 2 will be on the way. Urban Steez: Yea send that my way when it drops… So, where do you see yourself a year from now? Pete Genesis: Recognized in the industry for my creativity and the music continue to put out. I also see myself developing a fan base outside of Hip-Hop being able to cross genres and make Hip Hop acceptable to all types of music lovers. Urban Steez: Who and what are your influences? Pete Genesis: My Grandmother is the first person that comes to mind. The last time I saw her alive she told me with tears in her eyes that she just wanted to see me becoming something. That was something that has stuck with me over the years because of the many doubters I had throughout my life. She was a very strong woman and anytime I want to quit or feel like giving up, I just think of what she said to me. Musically, Kanye West, Common, Little Brother, 9th Wonder, Talib Kweli, The Diplomats, Ryan Leslie, John Legend, Jamie Foxx, The Alchemist, Just Blaze. Urban Steez: That’s wassup! What do you think of the hip hop/ music world right now? Pete Genesis: There is a lot of good things but, even more bad. I think people lost touch of their souls. The game has become about money and how much you can make off of your fans. Many artists right now I feel are not in it for the right reasons. Talent is no longer a required from what I see now a days. All you got to have now is a hot beat, auto-tune, and swag. But shout out to all people who stay true to Hip Hop and aren’t trying to fool their fans. Urban Steez: What music do you have playing in your sound system right now? Pete Genesis: Little Brother- The Listening, Common-Be, Talib Kweli and Mos Def- Blackstar Urban Steez: Good Rotation, conscious hip hop at its’ finest..Who is your celebrity crush? Pete Genesis: Has to be Latoya Luckett. Damn, you have me thinking about that Destiny’s Child video, No, No, No. Urban Steez: Ha ha, lol man ….
