In the fall of 2002, he dropped his first mixtape with his cousin Twin in their group Damacus Steel. The mixtape sold over 200 from school to school in the Prince William County. He did it again the following year with an upcoming DJ from Florida named DJ Hailo. The mixtape was called "PHZ-Sicks and DJ Hailo presents Signs Mixtape." On Feb. 1st, 2004, he won Teens Count Teen Talent Show hosted by Rane of WPGC 95.5. He was one of the first rappers to ever win the competition. Throughout the years, he did numerous shows before he graduated and headed to Philadelphia to go to college at Drexel University. During this time, he perfected his performances doing open mics hosted by Larry Larr and around the Philadelphia area. Due to school, he took a break from rap in 2007. It wouldn't be until late 2008, where he decided to drop the mixtape, "The Feature Presentation" for free online. For two months, he crafted a well put together mixtape of exclusives and songs featuring him with Top 40 songs and songs from the past, present, and future. The mixtape dropped on the internet December 8, 2008 and set the web on fire. Numerous music blogs posted the mixtape and has to this date has over 2,000 downloads. In the same week, his song "Don't Give Up" was played on Philly's Power 99. After this, the doors were opened. Currently, PHZ-Sicks is working on his next mixtape, the conceptual "Less Than Zero." The mixtape will come out in late July. During the meantime, he has been guest blogging for music sites, in admist of being sponsored by a prominent clothing company in fashion, collaborating, and setting his future in the music business. Everything in life involves PHZ-Sicks, so what is the music world without it?

Whaddup world and Urban Steez, I go by the name PHZ-Sicks (pronounced physics) and I represent the DMV (DC, Maryland, & VA). I’m from an area in Northern VA called Woodbridge. Urban Steez: How did you come up with your music name? PHZ-Sicks: The name came from when I was in middle school. I was going with a name that really wasn’t fitting me. During this inspired moment, I decided to let faith take its course. I opened my science book, went to the glossary, and whatever page I landed on and wherever my finger landed, I would go with it. I figured it would just be destiny and my finger landed on that. Physics, a lot of things in life are relate or referred to physics. What goes up, must come down and etc. All of that is physics, so I just figured, “What would music be without physics?” The spelling just came from being creative and doing something would reflect a tag done by a graffiti artist. Urban Steez: Nice…. How long have you been doing music and what made you get into music? PHZ-Sicks: I’ve been doing it for the last eight to nine years. It was a whole evolution of artist when it comes to me. I played with a little in elementary school, but when I was 13; my mom got a computer and AOL with the 28k. It took forever to load a page but I found forums and just battled. I was natural and never lost so by eighth grade; I took on challengers in Northern VA. I didn’t lose, so I decided to focus on music and drop mixtapes and give them out all over the area. The response was crazy and it gave me the fuel to keep going. I evolved from the battle artist to the storyteller to the club/ladies man to the complete artist. It was all done to be well rounded. What made me get in to it? That’s a tricky question. Music has always been integral part in my life. I use to wake up to my Grandmother playing the classics from Al Green to ZZ Top. On the other hands, my uncles were playing hip hop and I was exposed to movies like House Party and Purple Rain. It always had a grip on me that is really hard to explain, but it lead my hand to grabbing a pen. I just had a knack for it that I’m really grateful for. Urban Steez: That’s wassup, lol that AOL 28k was NO JOKE!! How would you describe your style and why? PHZ-Sicks: Hmm, I would say I’m a gumbo of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony with a dash of Jay-Z, dash of Outkast, some Lu’(pe) and a dash of Eminem. The reason for Bone is that I started out doing double time. That was my original style, but I’ve slowed it down over the years. I only break it out if the ball calls for it. I’ve been compared to Jay so I threw him. Outkast, Lupe and Em, for the simple fact that they are not afraid to do a different subject matter or use extended metaphors to get their points across. I like doing that. Why not be ill and make a person rewind back what you said so they can catch those lines they missed. Urban Steez: If you had to pick which label to be signed to what would it be and why? PHZ-Sicks: Funny that I’ve been asked this question in the past few weeks but the answer is between two labels: Atlantic Records and Roc Nation. I love Atlantic because they truly get behind their Hip Hop Artist. The prime example to look out is T.I. and Lupe. They pushed T.I. hard doing his first album (“I’m Serious) and it flopped. “Trap Muzik” was on the verge of coming out and they pushed it even harder than the first and it was a success. With Lupe, “Food & Liquor” was short of gold. During the climate of this industry, they could have easily given up and dropped him. A lot of labels go that route but they kept on and were rewarded with a Gold album with “The Cool.” I just love that they go hard for their artist. You need that in this digital age of music. I say Roc Nation is because they are creating a great stable of artist right now. You have Jay running it and right now have two great artists in the name of J. Cole and Mickey Factz. You also have the rumor around that he’s courting Drake to sign. Roc Nation, right now is looking like old Rocafella with the caliber of artist they already have. Why wouldn’t I want o be a part of that? Urban Steez: Good Stuff!! Who would you want to collaborate with in the music industry and why? PHZ-Sicks: That’s such a long list so I’ll give you the abridge version. On production, I would love to work with my VA brethren, Timbaland and The Neptunes. The list contains Just Blaze, Kanye, DJ Premier, ?uestlove, DJ Toomp, No I.D., Sean C. & LV, Large Professor, 9th Wonder, and the list goes on. Artist wise, Prince would be number one. He really doesn’t come over to the Hip Hop field, even though he has spit on some tracks. Just listen to “Incenses and Candles”, but definitely him. Jay-Z, Nas, Pharoahe Monch, The Roots, Clipse, Phonte of Little Brother, Chrisette Michele, Jazmine Sullivan, and the list goes on once again. Urban Steez: Prince and hip hop I think would be a interesting mix, I luv it!! What are you working on now and when can fans expect to hear more from you? PHZ-Sicks: Currently, I’m working on a mixtape called “Less Than Zero.” It’s a concept mixtape that follows me in semi-biographical storyline with great music throughout. I don’t want to give the full concept of the album because it’s told through it, but the story is uplifting and something we need during this time. The first half of the mixtape is a heavy sample DJ Premier vibe while the second half is futuristic. Al in all, its great music. So far, I have dropped two songs from the mixtape, “Then & Now”, produced by the Swag Kids, and “Fresh Cut.” Those are free download for people to bump around their way and the mixtape should drop for free online mid-July. Urban Steez: That’s Wassup!! Where do you see yourself a year from now? PHZ-Sicks: I’ll be finishing up my last year of college but I also hope that I’ll be traveling around that time and affecting people with my music. Shows, shows, and more shows. Urban Steez: Who are your influences? PHZ-Sicks: My number one influence is Prince. The great music he puts out and his perfectionist ways rub off on me. I’m really critical on what I put out. If I wouldn’t listen to it, you won’t hear it. Also, I learned a lot from the trials and tribulations he had with Warner Bros. and it just gave me insight in how to take control of your music as an artist. The other consist of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Outkast, Jay-Z, Nas, Pharoahe Monch, XV, and Eminem. Urban Steez: What do you think of the hip hop/ music world right now? PHZ-Sicks: I love the creativity coming out of Hip Hop right now. The changing of the guard for quality music is right around the corner. People want the dope lyrics and the dope beat. They just want great music. The only thing I don’t like is that there is no development of artist. That’s why artist are dropping like flies. There is no backing. They are just thrown out to make money. With any investment in a product, you should make sure that you do everything in your will to make sure it’s a great product. Once all the research is done, you put it out there and supply and demand happens. I just miss the whole concept of developing artist that will be around for years and not just a quarter. Urban Steez: Very true!! I feel you… What do you think you bring to the music game as far as your music is concerned? PHZ-Sicks: I feel that I’m a well-rounded artist. If you need the lyrical songs, I got you. If you need club songs, I got you. You need a song to uplift you or make you thing, I got you. If the ladies need anything, I got em’. My music is inspired by the views of a young educated college student. I talk about what goes on in my head and around me. I’m easy to relate to so just get to know me. My music is made to touch people and that’s what I’m here for. Urban Steez: What music do you have playing in your sound system right now? PHZ-Sicks: Right now, I’m bumping a lot of local artist in the DMV. From the Diamond District to Lyriciss to Hassani Kwess, Pro’Verb, Mouse, G*Two, and so on. Other than that, Foreign Exchange’s “Leave It All Behind” and XV’s “Please, Hold” are the albums I’m going through. Other than that, my iPod stays on shuffle due to the good taste of music already put on it (laugh). Urban Steez: Imma have to see what that DMV movement is about , I down for anything that keeps my ears buzzin. So you got any celebrity crushes? PHZ-Sicks: My top four is Alicia Keys, Rosario Dawson, Keri Hilson, & Paula Patton. I have a thing for beautiful women that have drive, intelligence, and creativity. It gets me all the time. Urban Steez: Yessir!! Drive, intelligence, and creativity in a women equals wifey!! How can business heads and fans contact you in the future (myspace, email, number, etc.)?
