Aiming for greatness, smoothvega has already targeted two consecutive awards for the Fort Worth Weekly's Best Rap/R&B Artist in both 2006 and 2007, and with the support of his hometown, he's also managed to gain the respect and rhymes of successful artists such as Chino XL on the track, "Walk With Me," as well as Crooked I, Royce Da 5'9", Sinful, and more recently, Houston's own-Lil' Flip on the well-received track, "Joyride." And that's exactly what this journey has been for Vega, and now this ride has put him in a position that'll release his record on a national level, making him a national success, but it doesn't stop there. His website alone, www.smoothvega.com has sparked interest in a range of diverse fans all looking to get a dose of Vega's rhymes, while gaining the attention of those in the industry with his impressive movement in digital distribution. smoothvega is proud to be a Latino making moves in this shady industry, but strives to be more than just that, but rather the first independent artist to sell record high numbers, and once he does, he can add that to his burgeoning resume. A resume that already boasts his track "Egomaniac," on the legendary DJ Smallz "Southern Smoke" mixtape series, "Joyride" on Chingo Blling's "Work In The Trunk" & DJ Eddie Deville's G Status mixtape series, a feature on MTV2's Dew Circuit Breakout, articles in XPOZ, Fort Worth Weekly, WWS and several other publications that are all raging about this Texan. He's literally booked and co-headlines his own shows with artists such as, Frankie J, Lil' Flip, Erik-Michael Estrada (formerly of O-Town) and several others who realize that smoothvega is really living up to his motto. "The Game Done Stepped Up," and Vega expresses this motto in several ways through his witty wordplay, down to his very own promotion; he's more than just an artist. Vega is a motivator and a true lyricist who has paved a new way for the independent artist to prosper, so don't be left out, cop the album today and step your game up.
Urban Steez interview with SmoothvegaLocation: Fort Worth,TX Album "3.10.85" can be purchased- Rhapsody and Amazon
Smoothvega : The name is smoothvega… The area I represent is Fort Worth, Texas… I represent for all my Latino’s out there struggling and striving… All I have ever known is being a musician so therefore that’s all I do… I’m not a gangster, thug, drug addict, hustler, pimp, etc… I’m a Hip-Hop Musician… nothing more, nothing less… I’m here to educate the uneducated and to prove that the best way to have success is by being yourself…. (Make sure to purchase my new album “3.10.85” on iTunes… Album Features: Crooked I, Chino XL, Lil‘ Flip, Royce Da 5‘9“, & Sinful) Urban Steez: How did you come up with your music name? Smoothvega : I have been asked this question a million times but for the record… I came up with the name smooth because I thought I was a ladies man growing up ha ha… As I got a little older I felt the name smooth was too common so I added on vega after reading a dictionary… The definition of vega in the dictionary was - the brightest star in the constellation…. I felt the brightest star really reflected what I felt about myself so that was that…. Nothing special…. In fact I think it’s a bit corny but at this point I couldn’t picture having any other name…. Urban Steez: Yea that name is a definite original…How long have you been doing music and what made you get into music? Smoothvega : The thing I pride myself the most on is the fact that anyone who has ever met me or known me, associates me with music. I have literally been doing this since I was 13 years old and anyone who has ever attended middle school or high school with me will vouch for that. I am in no way a new artist, I’ve been paying dues since 1998 when I was booking studio time in the Eastside of Fort Worth on Avenue H. I have had the opportunity to experience some of the most incredible things that anyone could ever experience. I’ve gotten the opportunity to work Crooked I, Chino XL, Lil’ Flip, Royce Da 5’9”, & Sinful… and I’ve held conversations with people within the industry from Multi-Platinum Recording Artist to label executives. I’ve always loved music, just knowing how it can capture any mood at anytime and how much one can influence with a voice through song is really what led me to want to pursue music. Ultimately, I want to inspire a generation though my music and prove to the youth that you can achieve anything you want with a positive attitude. Urban Steez: Thats wassup!! How would you describe your style and why? Smoothvega : Latin Hip-Hop Lyricist…. I’m definitely more lyrically oriented then the average Texas Artist however I feel I balance it well and keep my music very enjoyable to where it’s understandable and it doesn’t go over the average listener’s head. Up to this point, I have had a very serious conceptional approach with my music but not to the point where it’s too dark or too underground… Urban Steez: Yea man when I heard your tracks, I was like this cat is NICE!! If you had to pick which label to be signed to what would it be and why? Smoothvega : I never think about this so therefore I don’t have a preference. Truthfully, I would love to just to be a part of a record label with an experienced team of people that can share the same vision as myself and believe in me enough to stand behind me fully. Urban Steez: Real Talk!! Who would you want to collaborate with in the music industry and why? Smoothvega : There are so many people that I would love to collaborate with. Luckily enough for me, I have already gotten the opportunity to collaborate with some of my personal favorite artist that I have the utmost respect for such as Crooked I & Chino XL. Eminem, Ludacris, Immortal Technique, Tech N9ne, Carlos Santana, Fabolous, & Chamillionaire are all names that come to mind of artists that I would love to work with. Urban Steez: Yea man the all got fire!! What are you working on now and when can fans expect to hear more from you? Smoothvega : I just released my new album “3.10.85” which is available now on iTunes so my focus is only on pushing “3.10.85”. The album has been doing great digitally and continues to gain momentum. I’ve been writing new material for the sake of staying active and I intend to release some new material over the summer. I don’t plan to release a new album until I feel the time is right. With the times changing, I feel it is very important not go too long with being inactive so therefore I’m going to make a conscious effort to release something new soon but not too soon. Urban Steez: That’s a good deal, fans be sure to cop that album!! Who are your influences? Smoothvega : 2pac, Boyz II Men, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Jodeci, Eminem, Dru Hill, 112, & LL Cool J. . Urban Steez: What do you think of the hip hop music world right now? Smoothvega : In 2008, only a handful artists cracked gold and I think only Lil’ Wayne, Kanye West, & TI went platinum. Musically, I think hip-hop music is still being produced at a very high level so I think the lack of success as far as hip-hop record sales are concerned are attributed to the major record label executives who are not taking enough initiative to come up with new marketing vehicles to market and promote artists. Now a days, the success of a record is only being measured by one week sales, which is ridiculous. Everyone wants to point the finger at the digital era however that argument can only be justified to a certain extent. Hip-Hop as a whole is more influential then it has ever been but I just feel record sales are not where they need be because albums are not getting their proper due and labels are throwing in the towel way too soon. Urban Steez: Damn you got to the source on that, very true!! What do you plan to do with your first royalty check? Smoothvega : If I was to ever get a royalty check, the first thing I would do is deposit it in the bank and save it until the right opportunity came along to invest and multiply my money in. Depending on how much the royalty check was worth, would determine what I want to do with it. Ideally, I would love to expand my promotional brand Total Pandemonium. It’s always been a dream of mine to throw a free concert for the community with high profiled acts headlining. Urban Steez: That’s wassup!! What car do you feel will serve you right when you make it big? Smoothvega : One that works ha ha…. I’m not really into materialism so I’d be content with a Honda Accord. With all the issues going on the world, the last thing on my mind is to be flashy. Urban Steez: I feel that!! Who is your celebrity crush? Smoothvega : Somaya Reece all day…. She is sexy in every fascist of the word… Kim Kardashian gets an honorable mention as well… She is rather banging too… Urban Steez: Yea both would put a smile on my face…How can business heads and fans contact you in the future (myspace, email, number, etc.)? Smoothvega : You can hit me up anytime @ www.myspace.com/smoothvega // This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Urban Steez: Any shout outs? Smoothvega : I just want to shout to everyone reading… Big up’s to all the fans and supporters that have been holding me down since the beginning… I appreciate all the love… The self made movement has only begun….
