dividerand1205blog1The current system we have for BCS eligible schools in determining a champion is seriously flawed. It seems the FCS and Division II schools can make it work, but the elite league cannot. Maybe it's because everyone is so busy breaking NCAA rules, they don't have time to be efficient, I'm not really sure, but whatever it is, pull it together and let's find a solution. For years everyone complains, brainstorms, and things go right back to status quo. I'm sure there is a lot I don't understand about the process, but being that most of my career has centered around being a Division one athlete or working at the division one level, I'd like to think I have some knowledge on how things work at their root.

That being said, I'm a huge fan of good old fashioned playoffs. I really like the way the NFL and similarly, the FCS runs in this capacity and I think that the BCS could benefit from this type of championship selection. It really bothers me that right now matchups are chosen through voting, thus human error occurs in such instances as undefeated teams not being chosen for the National Championship game. I find the human vote irrelevant in the choosing of a winner in a sporting event. I completely understand that a lot of the BCS bowl system is based around money, and allocation of money to different leagues and teams (depending on the school), however, the big draw to college sports, is the fact that the athletes do it for the love of the game (ok except Reggie Bush, and maybe some of those Miami players who had "escorts"). I love college football because it's raw talent before you mix in the contracts, endorsement deals, and agents. So why is a computer assisting in choosing bowl participants? The teams and the talent, the wins and the losses, should determine the champion. The money, the tv, the sponsors, should adapt to the outcome of how those teams play, NOT the other way around. So here is what scenario I support (and I remind you, this isn't new): Take the conference champions, insert them into a playoff, take the winner from those games, move them to the next round, and so forth, until you have two left to compete for the title. The losing teams could still compete in bowl games, they would just be out the championship title opportunity. That way, we still make money on the bowl games, but the national champion is decided based upon the best team, not a bunch of old men sitting around a table tossing politically motivated votes around. And quite frankly, the only way anything is going to change in the BCS, is if the NCAA and its governing bodies decide to take an active role in the issue.

Currently, the NCAA does not have an official system for choosing its FBS champion and thus only serves as a governing force for the BCS series. If the NCAA takes a closer look at what it truly stands for, I think it will see the strong need for a playoff system for its FBS schools. The BCS is exciting, it's a huge moneymaker for college sports (giving more student athletes a better experience and a better education), and it brings the fans into the schools; I think given that in a recent study by a prominent University, about 63% of fans are for a playoff system of some kind, the option should quickly, seriously, and efficiently be explored.
