Zilfa Owen was born on a rainy day in Manhattan, NY on September 13th. With an entrance made in the heart of the Big Apple, its no wonder that she was destined to soar to greater heights. She excelled in poetry and writing and could always be found in her room working quietly on a project. It wasn't until she was 13 that she started to open up and start recording with local producers. She also started performing at Atlanta clubs and was featured in the magazine "You Betta Recognize."
As a dare, she auditioned for a singing group and was chosen for the female trio "Tomboi". The group went on to work with RL of Next, Atozzio, and Oak; creating a buzz in Atlanta and gaining auditions with labels Def Jam and Universal Records. Unfortunately, the group disbanded and Zilfa found herself back at square one. Instead of letting her dream die, Zilfa honed her talents and prepared for a solo career that she had always dreamed of.
Currently, Zilfa has released her new sexy ballad "Fantasy", a song she penned that showcases her sensual falsetto tone and writing skills. She has a distinctive, fresh voice and sound and is working on an untitled music project slated for the fall. Her star is bright and her throne is set so stay tuned for the reign of Zilfa, our new R&B princess!"
Location: ATL by way of PhillyZilfa - Fantasy
Urban Steez: Tell everybody your name and what area you represent?
My name is Zilfa and I represent Philly! I currently live in Atlanta, but Philly’s my home.
Urban Steez: How long have you been doing music and what made you get into music?
Zilfa: I’ve been singing since I was 8, but I didn’t actually start doing music until I was about 13. My interest in music was very natural; my mother used to sing and I grew up in a house that was always playing music. But I just remember seeing my favorite artists at the time singing and it just looked so fun! I wanted to be apart of that, I wanted to create something that other people could relate, dance and sing along to.
Urban Steez: Well, truth be told you have an AMAZING voice. How would you describe your style and why? And what do you feel you can bring to the table as an artist?
Zilfa: I would describe my style as R&B fused with pop melodies. I’ve very big on arrangements, so when I write I like to combine catchy melodies with harmonies and honest lyrics. I feel like I can bring a very fresh sound to the table as an artist as well as a great visual, because I give my all in performing too.
Urban Steez: Nice. What do you feel has been your greatest experience thus far as a music artist and why?
Zilfa: I used to be in a girl group a couple of years ago and during that time, we met and sang for Sylvia Rhone and L.A. Reid; which was just crazy to me! Being able to meet them and be in the same space felt great, and I always keep those images in my head for motivation.
Urban Steez: Wow, you was in company of some of the most powerful people in the music business. What do you feel is the biggest challenge you face being an artist?
Zilfa: The biggest challenge I feel I face as an artist is constantly reinventing myself; which to me is a challenge that I welcome.
Urban Steez: I can dig that! Who would you want to collaborate with in the music industry and why?
Zilfa: I’m a songwriter as well so I would LOVE to collaborate with Ester Dean and Frank Ocean, I absolutely love their writing styles and voices. Chris Brown, Alicia Keys, Drake, Kanye West, Missy Elliott, Dawn Richards, Brandy and Adele are some artists I would love to work with someday. Those are just the ones off the top of my head, I’m pretty sure there’s a longer list lol!
Urban Steez: Lol.. So how do you feel you rank against top music talents today? And why?
Zilfa: Honestly, I don’t feel the need to compete. I’m always trying to better my writing, vocal and performing skills and I know that there’s no limit when it comes to that. But I also have personality, I’m fun and passionate about my music so I’m confident in my talents.
Urban Steez: Confidence is key. What are you working on now and when can fans expect to hear more from you?
Zilfa: Well right now I do have my buzz single “Fantasy” that I’m promoting, you can check it out at www.reverbnation.com/Zilfa and become a fan, leave comments and share with your friends! lol I’ll be shooting a video for that early September but I am also working on a EP that will be released early October, so I’m very excited to share my music with everyone!
Urban Steez: “Fantasy” is a great song by the way. If music never existed what do you think you would be doing?
Zilfa: If music never existed, I would lose my mind! Lol! No but seriously I’m a creative person and I love writing as well, so I would probably be doing entertainment journalism.
Urban Steez: Give readers one tip about pursuing their dreams?
Zilfa: I think that people give up too easily when they’re pursuing their dreams so I would say patience and consistency are two important qualities to have. You have to work hard, stay dedicated and expand your network. Many singers/songwriters hole themselves up in the studio but you have to balance it out and make sure you get out there and network with others and get your name out.
Urban Steez: I agree. So what do you want to accomplish as an overall artist?
Zilfa: I want to make good music, reach people in different parts of the world and be successful. I don’t work this hard for nothing lol!
Urban Steez: Who and what are your influences?
Zilfa: My influences go way back from when I was a child when I listened to SWV, En Vogue, TLC and Aaliyah but Beyonce is one of my biggest influences. I mean, look at her! She’s great, she’s so multi-faceted, a great performer and her work ethic is crazy.
Urban Steez: So I see you’re a fan of the good ol 90’s r&b, it was a beautiful time for music. What do you think of the R&B/ music world right now?
Zilfa: The R&B music world is evolving and with more innovative artists coming in we’re starting to see more fusions of music instead of traditional R&B. You’re seeing rock, pop, dance and hip hop influences and I think that’s great, because we’re showing the world that R&B doesn’t have to cater to just one audience, and everyone can find their own place within it.

Urban Steez: What quote do you feel best represents you?
Zilfa: “Attitude matters!” You can ruin an opportunity for yourself having a bad attitude, and nobody likes a person with a stink attitude! lol
Urban Steez: Well said, attitude goes a long way in my book. What music do you have playing in your sound system right now?
Zilfa: Right now I’m listening to Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, and Dawn Richards. Their music is so refreshing and I can appreciate their different musical directions.
Urban Steez: Good stuff… Who is your celebrity crush?
Zilfa: Oh man!
I love Mark Wahlberg and Idris Elba, both gorgeous and talented men lol Plus Idris has that accent whhew! lol
Urban Steez: Okay Zilfa, I see you're are pretty clear about your leading men
… How can business heads and fans contact you in the future (myspace, email, number, etc.)?
