Clinton Davis Jr., Born and raised in Austin Texas (2-1)I spent the first seven years of my early childhood in Queens New York in Bland Projects. My father moved me back to Texas around eight years old and from then on I made occasional summer visits. I didnt see my father much growing up. working long nights as a Port Authority officer at the World Trade Center kept him away. On his days off I spent time with him doing what he loved most, making music. For years he worked hard for the family, so he wasn't able to pursue music like he wished. The fact that he couldn't, inspired me to fulfill out that goal since the age of 12. From then on I watched my father closely. I learned how to work equipment and started writing songs and poetry just like him.I told my father my plan was to pursue music as a career, and go to college to learn more about business that I didnt learn from reading. Originally my plan was this: once I graduated from college, he would be near retirement and we could start a music company together. Things were going according to plan until after my graduation in May 2001...September 11, 2001 my father tended to saving lives while at work due to terrorist attacks, suddenly my life changed. After days of searching for survivors in the 9-11-01 attack my father was announced deceased in one of the towers while escorting civilians. The pain and rage I felt at that moment was beyond belief of an explanation. So at that point i was like "what now?" I was nearly going to give up on all my dreams and goals, and forget about what my father worked so hard for. I had to become something in life and provide for my family in the future the same way he did for me. Standing around depressed wasn't going to help me succeed at all. With the support and encouragement of my mother I continued with the plan I set.2002 I started my own label, signed my artists, got a production team together, constructed a well-designed studio and a staff, and enrolled into Texas State University. My plan to continue the "dream" then began. The loss of my father is my determination to show this nation I have what it takes to make this label one of the best constructed in history. My label consists of artists with versatility, creativity, and a work ethic like no other. Im carrying out a promise and fulfilling a dream. Already releasing a major album in 2006 with IMPAC'S - ALMOST FAMOUS, 2008 major labels will realize I mean business and failure is not an option. I call myself Checkmate because to me this career is just like chess. It takes timing and strategy to take over the board then the game is yours. 2008 Above All Entertainment "The New Era of the South" - Checkmate

Urbansteez.com Interview with Checkmate

Unsigned Hype CheckmateUrbansteez.com: Tell us your name, and what area do you represent?

Checkmate: Clinton davis jr. bka checkmate these days lol. i represent austin texas (2-1,2-3,0-2) East side stand up and looooooooooook! queens stand up!

Urbansteez.com: How long have you been pursuing a career in the music industry?

Checkmate: I officially started in 2002 when i enrolled into texas state university. since then my label has releases on billboard.com, linked up with justo award winners NOIZEMOB, Hardcore Millionaires kaos what up!, and the lady everyone wants but aint gettin kream! kream management indeed! oh and thats' about 6years to answer your question more direct lol.

Urbansteez.com: What were you into before music?

Checkmate: Educating myself on the music business while pursuing a basketball career. i worked my ass of in practice to get what was mine but i guess you can say just like this rap game...i had to deal with politics lol!

Urbansteez.com: Thats wassup!! As an artist how would you describe your style and why?

Checkmate: Effective. i can sum that up in one word. my music is based on day to day things. most call it everyday music. so i say i have a very effective style. what im doing works for whatever type of song as long as im in that creative space at that moment for  the song concept. i write whats relevant and pure, no made up shyts haha. im blessed and thankful for my ability to grasp a moment in life and apply it to my music and make it sound good to myself and others. on that note, thanks for listening everyone!

Urbansteez.com: If you had your pick which label to be signed to, which label would it be and why?

Checkmate: long as im guaranteed full creative control, ownership of all masters on audio and video,65/35 split joint venture for my label to get these hard working talented artists out of bad situations, 2.5 million non recoupable advance, and 4 black range rovers hell where do i sign! other then that, i'd say aae been doing well without them and i been down that road with impac already...what up kydd!

Urbansteez.com: Yea now a days record companies like to have you in the box.... So, Who in your future would you want to collaborate with and why?

Checkmate: JOE BUDDEN! because he makes the best mood music in the history of everness and i personally believe he is the greatest ever to say hi, im a rapper here's my demo! after that tpain & flo rida because they just make good fun music and it just sounds good. they also have that real talk type music budden has but thats not why i really listen to them. like i always say, i cant dance in the club to "all of me" by joe budden lol.  my last two would have to be chamillionaire and bun b. bun b is just that dude in texas and reps this state to the fullest! he's a living legend and i damm sure have learned to respect that man even more since pimp's passing...rip. chamillionaire because after gutta i really feel he is the best lyricist/rapper from our great state of texas! mary j blige too because damm, she just makes songs so damm meaningful and powerful when she gets on there.

Urbansteez.com: What are you working on now, and when can we expect to hear more of you?

Checkmate: Fetti kings series. dj rokz, kream, checkmate, miami kaos...thats a nice squad aint it! lol. may 2nd fetti kings 2 just released so be sure to hit up myspace.com/aae to purchase that artwork drawn by the 3x award winning designer miami kaos and get your free cd! you can expect to hear more from me everyday actually lol. like i said, i make everyday music so when things happen i write and the im straight to the booth. so with that said, just stay on my page daily and watch for them bulletins and friend status updates, surscribe to my blogs and contact list ..internet iron man dammit you aint heard!? lol myspace.com/ceocheckmate

Urbansteez.com: Who are your influences?

Checkmate: to be honest besides my father, mother and joe budden lol. hell these hatas are my biggest influence. the fact that all these so called guys who are GRINDING more then me talk down on me and behind my back..they influence me to write even more good songs. people in general influence my writing process. i will probably have a line about this interview in a couple songs lol. i apply my life to my music and thats what makes it pure. when my bi polar ass bm starts threatning me and all that, i talk crazy about her ass in a song...some fellas are in these situations they can relate. when i fukked up in the past i talked about it in my songs and the women relate and respect the sincerity. LIFE is my influence god has blessed me to speak about it and make it rhyme...now i'm one of the realest out! stop letting these rappers lie to ya'll lol.

Urbansteez.com: What do you think of the hip hop / music world right now?

Checkmate: I love it! see everywhere im at folks are complaining about the downloads,myspace..well online period! how can you be mad and saying hip hop is dead when 17 yr olds are getting they mothers out of the hood and into mansions? why are ya'll saying the game is dead when 15 yr olds are making great mixtapes and marketing like they were 35!? why are they saying myspace is killing the game when people that are not in nyc, cali, atl, dallas can now upload music and be heard from the smallest town in the world and givien a fair chance!? see most that are complaining and saying its dead aint making no money for one, for two they time has come and passed. so again why are you saying hip hop is dead? oh it's because the south is taking over and you cant do shyt about it but cry and whine? why dont you get feedback from folks and improve as an artist and keep up with time... the way the game is now they say if you make a dance song or club song your not hip hop. what the fukk was rappers delight a monmental save the world song? ok thought so. another thing im sick of in the game right now is how folks are complaining about rappers bars and saying the new generation is bubble gum lol! no disrespect at all but back then when SO CALLED hip hop was better...they bars were like this I WOKE UP EARLY, TOLD MY FRIEND HI/ GOT ME SOME WATER THEN TOLD MY FRIEND BYE!/ but ya'll complain about soulja boy?  the world is full of hate and so much more in the music industry. again i will say this, we need to elect a hip hop president it's so much damm politics now! i'll go on forever about this and noone can prove me wrong because im right, next question.

Urbansteez.com: Where do you see yourself a year from now?Unsigned Hype Checkmate

Checkmate: Online everywhere from itunes to amazon making money and history, paying my child support on time, taking care of my family and getting these hardworking guys from the hood some.homes. a year from now checkmate will be a brand, because im the realest around and i appreciate each and everyone. rappers, entertainers are nothing without the people so i dont understand why they get so big headed and brag a docious lol.

Urbansteez.com: What will you do with your first royalty check?

Checkmate: Shyt im still waiting on all my damm money from Impac's ALMOST FAMOUS album. tell tower records and bayside and john pegram and shawn and murray sharp i said it's only a matter of time.... i know what you fukkas did! but umm anyway, with my first one from checkmate's rap career...im getting me all kinds of insurance! healthcare for my family and kids damm all that im no fool like these so called local stars loooooooooook but dont hate im just focused im sorry. ok and then homes  range rovers cant i stunt a lil and tell all my hatas oh but loooooooooook  at these!

Urbansteez.com: When you make it big, what car will you first purchase?

Checkmate: I own a 73 MARK IV continental...thats the only car i will ever have. i will be buying buying range rovers like xbox 360 games indeed!

Urbansteez.com: I see, What's in your sound system right now?

Checkmate: mm3 and fetti kings 2, then my music when im in certain moods, flo rida, and of course aae gosh.

Urbansteez.com: Which female in the game would you pursue first and why?

Checkmate: single, married or not she will know if i meet esther baxter im at least going on one date! hell she can come loooooooooooooook!

Urbansteez.com: Lmao, Miss baxter aint NO JOKE!! How can fans contact you in the future (myspace, email, PO box, etc.)??
