Compton, California is perhaps the most influential city in not only hip hop culture, but in popular culture as a whole. The birth place of N.W.A. which in turn gave rise to Eazy E, Dr Dre, Ice Cube and later The Game, has another reason to celebrate its storied history, K.dot as well is a Compton native that attended Centennial High school with his first mixtape project Y.H.N.I.C. he also made an appearance on the street DVD How the West Was One, he started to bring attention by the young age of 15. K.dot brings a whole different style, not just a typical every day rapper there is a captivating and unique style. Not only having the ability to battle rap but to format great songs for different genres. Signed to independent label Top Dawg ENT, K.dot has had many notarizations from music heavy hitters such as The Game, which quoted “K.dot is a MONSTA”.

K.Dot Urban Steez: Tell everybody your name and what area you represent?

My name is KDOT and I represent Compton, Ca.

Urban Steez: How did you come up with your music name?

K.Dot: My name is actually an abbreviation of the first initial of my birth name. Nothing over the top, just want to be simple as possible. The name stuck since grade school

Urban Steez: How long have you been doing music and what made you get into music?

K.Dot: I've been writing rhymes since 13. Music has always been apart of me. My parents played music constantly when I was growing up. I actually took it serious the moment I found out I had a knack for writing. I started studying classics to better my craft and found a local studio to record.

Urban Steez: How would you describe your style and why?

K.Dot: I don't like to say I have a certain style, because I'm an artist at heart that has a very open mind when it comes to being creative. Authentic. That would be the word to describe my music.

Urban Steez: I can dig that! Now being from Compton, tell the world what the definition of Hub City is and its relation to Compton?

K.Dot: Hub City is just a nickname for Compton that was given because of the unique way it’s positioned in the LA County if you were to look on a geographical map. Compton is the city, Hub city is the nickname.

Urban Steez: Okay I see…Tell the world about the whole Top Dawg ENT. Movement, what have you been able to accomplish?

K.Dot: Top Dawg is a label that consist of four talented artist; JAYROCK, KDOT, AB-SOUL, and SchoolBoy Q. It’s the biggest movement on the WESTCOAST right now. Past accomplishments have been just putting out quality music that the people love. Over ten mixtapes and counting right now. Biggest accomplishment is just making a stamp on the West coast, which will soon be global.

Urban Steez: That’s wassup! Who would you want to collaborate with in the music industry and why?

K.Dot: I want to collaborate with anyone that is passionate about what they do. That’s who I vibe the best with. From Jay-Z to Soulja Boy. I don’t care! If you’re passionate I fucks with you. It’s not about whose more talented with me. You’re almost guaranteed to have a positive outcome when you are involve with people who are just creative as you are.

Urban Steez: True, that’s when the magic happens. What are you working on now and when can fans expect to hear more from you?

K.Dot: Write now I’m working on 3 streets albums. All original music. The masses should expect these tapes throughout the next few months.

Urban Steez: Who are your influences?

K.Dot: The usual suspects, 2PAC, BIGGIE, NAS, EM. I listen to a lot of oldies as well, such as AL GREEN. You can really hear the passion in their voice. You can really tell they loved what they do, back in them classic times.

Urban Steez: I second that, music was straight from the heart, it gets no better. If we can get music back to that state as a whole, OH Boi!! With that being said, what do you think of the hip hop/ music world right now? K.Dot

K.Dot: I like the state it’s in right now. It’s a wide range of music you can select from if you’re a fan of music. Whether it’s a sing-a-long or some real rap shit. I like it! Artist are going back to the vulnerable stages of music. Where an artist can put his real life in music and people can relate to it. Not just to be talking about chains and guns all the time.

Urban Steez: Good Stuff! What do you feel you bring to the game as far as west coast rap and hip hop in general?

K.Dot: Just to be able to show the world it’s more than just chuck taylors and gangbanging. We have a lot more to offer creatively out here. I’m expecting to let it be known. As far hip hop, I just want to continue to keep the culture at its high. There is nothing new under the sun. I just wanna continue its legacy the right way. Not the record label way.
