Lerix is a Brooklyn based emcee whose recording style is progressive and reminiscent of the “Golden Era.” His infatuation with hip hop started at the age of 14 through his older cousin Hank Love, who was the co-host of 105.9’s “Hank love and Half-Pint show.” Soon enough, Lerix started writing songs, and joined ciphers in high school with his friends in the lunchroom. Lerix’s music is often compared with hip hop heavy weights like Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.
In 2009, Lerix gained the opportunity to meet with record A&R’s. The meetings helped Lerix realize he wouldn’t compromise his persona to fit into the “industry model.” During the past year Lerix gained new perspectives on life and has not stopped recording music.
With constant recording, Lerix has preformed at numerous shows around the city. Most notably he played at Littlefield, for the Full Spectrum Show as part of the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival; at the Beauty Bar and at Rockwells. Lerix released “It’s a (W)Rap…Again!“ in July 2010 and is gearing to release his debut EP “New Heights”.
Lerix- Another Day
Urban Steez: Tell everybody your name and what area you represent?
“What’s up World? My name is Lerix! Straight out of Brooklyn NYC!”
Urban Steez: How did you come up with your music name?
Lerix: It was inspired by a kid in high school. I tend to zone out whenever I am writinga new song or verse. This kid wanted me to make room for him at a table so he yelled out ‘YO Mr. LYRICS!.. MOVE BITCH!’ Now that’s turning lemons into lemonade! Lol
Urban Steez: Haha, I hear that! How long have you been doing music and what made you get into music?
Lerix: I’ve been recording and releasing music for about 3 years now. I decided to get into music because I’ve always had a strong passion for it. I’ve been writing rhymes since I was 15 and that love has never died.
Urban Steez: How would you describe your style and why? And what do you feel you can bring to the table as an artist?
Lerix: My style is lyrical and witty. I try my best to be as clever and creative with my words as I can. What I bring to the table is honesty everyone can relate too. We all go through different moods and I try my best to capture those moments in a song.
Urban Steez: That’s Wassup! If you had to pick which label to be signed to what would it be and why?
Lerix: I would pick GOOD Music hands down. The roster of artists is amazing!
Urban Steez: What’s the biggest challenge you feel you face as an artist?
Lerix: The biggest challenge I faced was being totally open with my fans. It’s been getting easier lately but at first It was tough to be so honest and open. I’m glad I got over it, I’ve met some really great people in the last year.
Urban Steez: Yea that’s kinda of a big Deal, when it comes to music…Who would you want to collaborate with in the music industry and why?
Lerix: My number 1 pick would be Justin Timberlake. Dude is an amazing artist and I feel he brings a special energy to any song he’s featured on.
Urban Steez: So how do you feel you rank against top music talents today? And why?
Lerix: Honestly, I’ve never ranked myself with other artists. I don’t think art or artists should ever be in competition. It’s more important to me to touch and inspire people, than it is to be the “best.”
Urban Steez: I can Dig that! What are you working on now and when can fans expect to hear more from you?
Lerix: I justput the final touches on my upcoming EP “New Heights” Download Here.. I’ve also started recording for my next project “Audio Arcade” which I hope to have out around early spring.
Urban Steez: Niiiiiice. New Heights is GOOD MUSIC, we will be looking forward to that “Audio Arcade”! Where do you see yourself a year from now?
Lerix: A year from now I will be rocking more stages, working with a lot of different artists and making a big impact in the music scene.
Urban Steez: Who and what are your influences?
Lerix: I have a TON of musical influences spanning from hip-hop to Japanese rock. Aside from music I am influenced by movies, paintings, cartoons, photography, and architecture – anything where creativity was used.
Urban Steez: Nice, well rounded I see! What do you think of the hip hop/ music world
right now?
Lerix: I think hip-hop right now is beginning to get back to the basics or creating music, not just being able to spit, but actually creating music that can last for generations. It’s a beautiful thing.
Urban Steez: Yessir..What music do you have playing in your sound system right now?
Lerix: Right now I’m listening to a lot of Kanye, RJD2, the Bird and the Bee, Vampire Weekend, White Stripes and Childish Gambino.
Urban Steez: Good Stuff. Who is your celebrity crush?
Lerix: Hmm…If I had to pick just one celebrity crush… I would pick Olivia Munn.
Urban Steez: Oh Kaaay Asian Persuasion huh?!?!
How can business heads and fans contact you in the future (myspace, email, number, etc.)?
Lerix: You can contact me by visiting my website www.lerixmusic.com , you can also hit me up on twitter @Lerixmusic and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
Urban Steez: Any shot outs?
Lerix: Yea, I want to give a big shout to all my fans and all my supporters. I appreciate all the love I’ve been getting it means a lot to me. Thanks so much!!
