Born January
18th 1986, Cheryse Nicol Pickens is on the road to international
stardom. Better known as Chey.N her passion for music and years of
struggle have created this dynamic rapper/singer/writer/dancer.
An extraordinarily multitalente
At the tender age of 6 Chey's spunky character was discovered by an agent during a family trip to FAO Schwarz, which began her career in film and television. Since then she has appeared on well loved shows such as all my children, Law and Order, Criminal Intent and Special Victims unit, on networks such as Nickelodeon, NBC and ABC, in musical theater productions (Les Miserables) and many more...
However music and dance are her first loves. Chey has been determined to entertain the world from the beginning, she started dancing at just 3 years old; then got her 1st recording contract with Krizza Muzic at 14 and worked with development agents T-Money (fomer host of YO Mtv Raps) and Ossie Gibson to help shape her unique Hiphop & RNB/Punk persona. She's blazing, from her bold fresh flow to her sharp lyrical content to her gritty soulful voice she is simply unlike any one else. Repping a new genre which she affectionately calls Cheeky Pop in homage to her British roots.
Chey.N is currently working on her LP and collaborating both as an artist and writer with various other artists, producers, dj's, dancers, actors and directors. Chey N. : Chey.N, the neon kid. I'm global but I rep NYC all day ;o) Urbansteez.com: How long have you been pursuing a career in the music industry? Chey N. : I'v been in the game since I started professionally dancing and actin at like 6, so a long asssss time. Got my first deal when I was 14. I just turned 22 Urbansteez.com: What were you into before music? Chey N. : I was a dancer for a minute. I was traveling break dancing and performing around the country. Urbansteez.com: As an artist how would you describe your style and why? Chey N. : Fresh! Lol but I have to say that dont I. Alot of people say that my delivery reminds them of the early 90's, I'v got a real cheeky way of saying things. My singing voice is more rock tho, so its a crazy mash up btwn that and the way I rhyme. I'm kinda on some other isht sometimes haha but people have been really gravitating towards my music and my style. I think they just ready for a change. Urbansteez.com: If you had your pick which label to be signed to, which label would it be and why? Chey N. : Def Pen Music Group..why..cause I'm the president thats why!! We're looking for major digital distribution right now but the movement is crazy. Shout to Ducketz the big boss and the whole def pen familia. Artist and producers dont hesitate to get at us! Urbansteez.com: Who in your future would you want to collaborate with and why? Chey N. : Well I'm kind of like a kid in a candy store when it comes to music haha. Even though I dont do a lot of collabo's I love working with other artists it brings something new out of me everytime.I'm stok'd about working with Boy Shy and Fly Society both are heavy as hell. I really want to be able to do a song with Bootsy Collins one day and I could die happy if I ever got to play with Prince. Urbansteez.com: What are you working on now, and when can we expect to hear more of you? Chey N. : Right now Hard Hitta is going bananas on the underground and radios starting to pick up, so we're following up with the first single from my Def Pen EP its called Breathe, it drops in April so watch for it!
Urbansteez.com: "Hard Hitta" is the S#!t !! Who are your influences? Chey N. : Hmm I always have to think when people ask me that question.... I think classic rock soul and funk really shaped my sound. So definitely P-Funk, Bootsy Collins Jimi Hendrix. Urbansteez.com: Wow Jimi was No Joke!! What do you think of the hip hop / music world right now? Chey N. : Music is a cycle.. we go through phases, right now we're kind of in a disco type one single era. Its good for the industry though because it means that the game is about to change. With cd's becoming obsolete the industry is looking for something new that people can really believe in enough to go out and support. So as much as some of these songs drive me crazzzzy I appreciate what its gonna do in the long run. Low is my shit tho, I cant front. Chey N. : Buy my mom a house, gotta take care of mom dukes first. Urbansteez.com: Don't worry mama dukes, your baby girl GOT CHA!!! When you make it big, what car will you first purchase? Chey N. : Hmmmm...I'm so not the flashy car type chick but I might have to get that all black SLR with the butterfly doors. Urbansteez.com: What's in your sound system right now? Chey N. : Seal, Kanye West, John Legend, Danity Kane, Donell Jones, Coldplay, Fly Society, Sade Urbansteez.com: Every guy wants to know what does it take to get to your heart? Chey N. : Haha well I am pretty much married to my business but when a guy comes along thats swagged out enough to take my focus from my music, then he will definitely have my heart. Chey.N's current projects: Right now with Hard Hitta going crazy on the underground and starting to get spins on radio her main focus is recording an EP and gearing up to release the first single from that project (a follow up to Cheeky Pop Volume 1 released 10/31/07) "Breathe" in late April under the Def Pen Music Group imprint but is still unsigned and looking for major distribution, She actually also just accepted the title of President at the label (Def Pen Music Group). We're co-sponsoring the upcoming Pepsi showcase tour which Chey is also in talks to perform on.. its the takeover! BIO CHEEKY POP VOL 1 (courtesy of isound.com Oct 2007): Cheynmusic is the independent movement behind one of the most anticipated artists of 2008: Chey.N. This dynamic 22 year old singer/dancer/spitter/songwriter and self proclaimed "Neon Kid" is the entire package, not only is her style unique and fresh but with dance experience of over 15 years, her performance set is electric!
