Much in the way ancient Egyptian scribes used hieroglyphics to artistically document the historical events of their people, The Gliffics uses his lyrical sensibilities and flow to tell his own personal history, weaving his take on life with lessons he's learned the hard way. His rapping moniker, an abbreviation of "hieroglyphics," is a throwback to the Egyptian father he never had the chance to know. Only three-years-old when his father died, young Amir Mohamed Elshafiy faced a line of hardships growing up in Queens, New York. He struggled to stay in school through rough times at home; his mother worked two jobs to get by, but they still experienced bankruptcy and eviction. He spent much of his childhood trying to learn and practice Islam, but with his father's guidance gone and his Russian Jewish mother working around the clock to keep food on the table, keeping his Muslim identity was a confusing and difficult task to figure out as a kid. Before making it to high school he was taken to juvenile hall, spending the next two years behind bars and in and out of group homes. At 16 he was sent to Rikers Island and made it out with five years of probation with electronic monitoring. The stint at Rikers was a turning point in Gliffics' turbulent life, and from the moment he was released, hip hop was his new outlet.
The Gliffics began writing music and performing around his new neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY, rolling with a friend who showed him the ropes of becoming a lyricist. He spent the next two years working on his craft, and then a friend introduced him to Ben "Fex" Solano, a composer and producer who was building a talented team at Mihz Productions. After talking to Gliffics and hearing him freestyle, Fex knew that his potential was huge, owing not just to his talent but to Gliffics' impressive discipline and motivation. Fex and Gliffics have worked together ever since, creating a sound as original as Gliffics' lyrics, lines that deftly rhyme and flow to share the experiences of a negative past on the streets yet inspire a positive future that rises far above life's circumstances. To meet and know Gliffics now, you probably wouldn't guess him to be the same Amir Elshafiy from his years growing up. With his debut album in the works, a music video in pre-production, a marketing plan underway and show dates being booked both in the U.S. and in Egypt, The Gliffics' presence will be felt as he shares his innovation in music and proves his personal mantra, "Don't let your past predict your future." URBANSTEEZ.COM Interview with Gliffics
Gliffics: I go by the name Gliffics, I am an Egyptian hip hop artist from brooklyn NY. Urbansteez.com: How long have you been pursuing a career in the music industry? Gliffics: I have been writing music for 8 years and have been working on my breakthru just recently, I would say within the last 6 month's. Urbansteez.com: What were you into before music? Gliffics: I always had an artistic side, i would do graffiti. Urbansteez.com: As an artist how would you describe your style and why? Gliffics: I have many styles, I’m everywhere with my music. kind of like how my life has been. I write about all aspects of my life experiences or understandings, I’m a realism. if your music is real the people will feel and recognize it. I have wordplay, I’m clever, my flow is unpredictable, I’m fresh, I’m something new and I’m something you never heard before….and that’s what makes the Gliffics. Urbansteez.com: If you had your pick which label to be signed to, which label would it be and why? Gliffics: I personaly like what shady records has done with taking on 50 cent and working with Dr. Dre successfully. I always liked there music and shady records made a big dent in the game, as I will. So I would say shady records would be my #1 pick. Urbansteez.com: Who in your future would you want to collaborate with and why? Gliffics: There are so many artists I would love to work with, but if i had to pick it would have to be nas. Listening to nas was the reason I kept writing. I am so differant than nas but i can compare myself to his music. Urbansteez.com: What are you working on now, and when can we expect to hear more of you? Gliffics: I’m working on a project to release an album and do a international tour from ny to egypt. Everything is in the works right now! There is no solid release date just yet. You can expect to hear new music from me weekly on myspace or at your open mic shows. just stay tuned and keep an eye and an ear out for Gliffics. Urbansteez.com: Who are your influences? Gliffics: My life, nas, jay-z, eminem, wu-tang, snoop dogg, outkast, the list goes on....
Urbansteez.com: What do you think of the hip hop / music world right now? Gliffics: Its flooded, this world is all about change, so I cant blame where the game has gone. I dont expect the golden age to come back but it will be great to hear more of what hip hop is really about.. I think artists today lost the values of hip hop music. We need more music to go down in history, bring things back to clearer perspective. Urbansteez.com: What will you do with your first royalty check? Gliffics: laugh on my way to the bank, lol j/k.... I would most likely celebrate with my closest friends and family. Urbansteez.com: When you make it big, what car will you first purchase? Gliffics: I always liked bmw or mercedes benz, its a toss up. Urbansteez.com: What's in your sound system right now? Gliffics: The gliffics. Urbansteez.com: which female in the game would you pursue first and why? Gliffics: I like alicia keys she's hot and we can make great music together. Urbansteez.com: How can fans contact you in the future (myspace, email, PO box, etc.)?? Gliffics: I can be reached at www.myspace.com/thegliffics and on my email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .. everyone is more than welcome to hit me up. Urbansteez.com: ANY SHOT OUTS??? Gliffics: shout out to fex, sem-one, the whole mihz production team.. and ofcourse to all my brother's. and to the people out there listening everyday! Check out the Gliffics SMASH " YOUUR SOO WROOOOOONG" at www.myspace.com/thegliffics
