For the past couple of years, the south has been losing
respect in the music industry. Houston
has been particularly persecuted for the lack of substance in hiphop. Although
the south has been labeled as the haven for club rappers, a fresh and upcoming
rapper is emerging on the scene. Uzoy was born July 5, 1988 in Houston, Texas.
Growing up she always had ambitions for the music industry, writing her first
songs in high school and performing in talent shows as a child. Further
pursuing her interest in singing and rapping, she met up with friends who
shared the same goals, carrying out their musical talent throughout high
school.
She started the entertainment group Street Pharm shortly after her friend
R.Rich left the group he was in. At the head of her group, she faced the fact
that good beats weren't offered at reasonable prices for singers. Realizing
that R.Rich needed beats to be able to sing on, she started producing in
October of 2006. Producing off and on now for a year, Uzoy has finally started
to achieve the sound she has wanted to obtain as an R&B producer. The
industry has never been kind to female rappers and hasn't known many female
producers, but it is showing a lot of love.
Currently working on her first project, Uzoy is attending college while doing
collaborations with various artists in the U.S.
With her music breaking stereotypical barriers, Uzoy is sure to dominate the
hip hop scene in the following years.

Urbansteez.com Interview with Uzoy
Urbansteez.com:
Tell us your name, and what area do you
represent?
Uzoy: I go by Uzoy which
is pronounced "uzi" (Like the gun). Born and raised in the south side of Houston, Texas.
Urbansteez.com:
How long have you been pursuing a career
in the music industry?
Uzoy: I've been seriously
pursuing my career for about a year and a half. Before that, I was just trying
to get myself prepared to compete with the people already out by getting my
hands in different aspects of music.
Urbansteez.com:
What were you into before music?
Uzoy: I was always into
the music but, before I was rapping, I was a bit of a nerd. Lol. After getting
into high school, I started getting into basketball and writing. That's when I
met up with the people I do music with now.
Urbansteez.com:
As an artist how would you describe your style
and why?
Uzoy: Well, I don't think
my style can really be explained simply, although people call me the
"female Lupe Fiasco". I could just say it's a fresh sound and a fresh
outlook. I try to do my own thing and bring something new in each track I lay
down. I just see myself as an artist bringing something new to the table since
I'm a female rapper from the south that sounds like nothing you've heard out of
the south before. I'm simply trying to make good music.
Urbansteez.com:
I was going to say a female Kanye, but
they both are on the same page....If you had your pick which label to be signed
to, which label would it be and why?
Uzoy: My dream label of
course would be Roc-A-Fella, but I think I could rock with Def Jam or Atlantic. Basically, anyone who will give
me the kind of deal I'm looking for and the status I'm trying to achieve.
Urbansteez.com:
Who in your future would you want to
collaborate with and why?
Uzoy: Wow. There are so
many people that I'm going to have to just cut the list short. I would
definitely want to work with Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco. Basically, they
are hip hop at its best right now. They're lyrics and swag are all on point.
Lauren Hill would be another great collaboration. Just to see two females vibe
on a track with it having substance would be incredible. I don't want to make
this an incredibly long list so I'll keep it at that.
Urbansteez.com:
What are you working on now, and when
can we expect to hear more of you?
Uzoy: Right now, I'm
working on my first project entitled "The [DEF]inition". It mostly
has original production. Most people advise me to go ahead and call it my album
but I feel like I need an initial foundation to let people see what I am all
about before I put out a bigger project.
Urbansteez.com:
Who are your influences?
Uzoy: Since I was young,
I always looked up to Jay-Z and Nas. But more recently, I've really been
inspired by Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco. They're really keeping music alive
right now.
Urbansteez.com:
I feel that...What do you think of the hip
hop / music world right now?
Uzoy: It is a little
tiring. I see the same kind of tracks, styles, and gimmicks are being recycled,
with only a few exceptions (Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco). The same images and
stories are being retold and redone. I think that is why we are seeing some
artist trying to break away from strictly hip hop by incorporating another
genre like rock, pop, or techno. But once one person does, everyone else still
follows. It's like originality is fading away.
Urbansteez.com:
What will you do with your first royalty
check?
Uzoy: Upgrade my whole
family. Lol. Get us living the way we need to be and buy myself a nice car.
Urbansteez.com:
Gotta take care of the fam bam!! When
you make it big, what car will you first purchase?
Uzoy: I don't want
anything too flashy, but I want something nice. I've always been into Lexus's.
I'm not looking for a SUV, so I'll probably go with a sedan.
Urbansteez.com:
What's in your sound system right now?
Uzoy: I'm usually
listening to Lupe or Kanye but more recently, there have been some myspace
artists who have been catching my attention. I personally don't care where good
music comes from. As long you put yourself out there and let others jam it.
Urbansteez.com:
That's wassup, if its's hot, its HOT!! How
can fans contact you in the future (myspace, email, PO box,
etc.)??
Uzoy: I respond very
regularly to my myspace page which is www.myspace.com/uzoy or they can get at me on my email
